February Contest Winners!

2/26/2019

My apologies for taking so long to choose winners, but I was getting entries up until yesterday and hated to cut it off too soon. I'm serious about clearing out my book stash! I just don't have room to store anything extra, and that explains why I chose seven winners from this contest, even though I had fewer entries than usual.

So Michelle, Debby, Kerry, Denise, Melinda, Mary, and Charles will be receiving signed copies of the books they requested, and in the case of those who said they'd take any of the books, I tried to pick out a good one!

One thing I forgot to mention in my newsletter is that I've posted a lot of my Critter Cam videos on my website for those who don't belong to Facebook...and yes, I do have quite a few readers who aren't active on Facebook, and sometimes I wish I could join them. But if you go to the menu at the top of the page and click on CRITTERCAM1, (or the link in the word!) it will take you to two pages (so far) of videos of the critters wandering around our new digs.

I've got my pre-op appointment for cataract surgery this Thursday, and the operation will be next week. I'm really anxious to get this over with so I can get back to work. My vision is getting worse by the day, and everyone I've talked to who has had the surgery says it really is amazing how much better the world looks!

On a personal note, I lost my older brother this past week. He's been living with cancer for the past year and a half, and has packed so much into the time he and his wife had left together. He was an athlete to the end, an avid runner, hiker, and fisherman. When I was little he was my big brother and I adored him. When I got into high school, my teachers all held me up to his impossible standards, and I didn't like him nearly as much, but then when he graduated from Kings Point Academy while I was in high school and left the keys to his MG Midget with me when he went to sea, he was absolutely the all-time favorite brother once again.

He was a wonderful brother, husband, father, grandfather and uncle, and I will miss his funny texts, his beautiful photos of wildflowers and mushrooms, and the many fish he caught and released, the record of all the things he saw on his many hikes in the beautiful mountains around Portland, OR. I miss just knowing he was there, a link to a past growing farther away every day.

I hope to get the books mailed out tomorrow, but I lost the entire day today with other things that needed doing, so I will do my best, but it may be Thursday before they go out.

Thanks to all of you who entered, and a reminder that when I have a contest entry without an address when I specifically request one, I will delete it. I had a few of those this time, and while I used to let it slide, I really can't anymore, not if I want to get my work done. It's too time consuming to chase you down.

Take care, I hope the weather isn't wearing you down, and creating more problems than it should. Here in California, our snowpack is something like 150% of normal so far this year--the snow at our place finally melted after keeping essentially snowbound for the past couple weeks. Thank goodness we have really nice neighbors who let us park our cars across the road from our driveway, which was blocked until yesterday afternoon.

Spring is coming...the frogs are singing out in the pond and we had fourteen mallard ducks--seven pairs--going through all the courtship rituals that ducks do at this time of year, and that tells me we're in for a change in spite of the snow!

Watch for flowers. They're out there somewhere!

Kate

That's a photo Doug took of Georgetown in the snow one morning before I was even out of bed! It still looks much like it did during the gold rush, I imagine....without the cars!

Thank you, and you're right. Everyone I've asked about it says don't wait, get it done. Problem is, it takes months to get scheduled for the appointment!

I'm so sorry for your loss. It's seems I've reached the age where I lose someone every year, each one is hard but it helped me when I focus on all the good memories and not the loss.

Part of why I was so late getting my winners notified. I was looking for photos for his grandson to do a video for the service, and spent an entire day with pictures and memories.

I'm so sorry, Jaime. My father died 46 years ago, and I still miss him. It gets better with time, but I have so many regrets that he didn't get to know his grandchildren or see how each of his three children turned out.

For privacy. It's a policy I've always had, and I will be sending notes to the winners once I mail the books.

I'm so sorry for your loss.I lost my younger brother when I was 5 and my older brother when I was 15. I'm 61 now and still miss them so much but now when I think of them I remember all the fun we had. The pain will ease in time.

Kate Douglas

How awful! I can't imagine losing two siblings. I'm so sorry for such an awful loss. It's just my younger brother and me, now. We were always three, but I agree with you. When you loved someone, you will always feel their loss in your life.

So sorry for the loss of your brother. Your family is in my prayers.
I have had cataract surgery - easy and the results are great. Just be sure to follow the "recovery" procedures.

Kate Douglas
2/27/2019 10:22:14 am

Thank you, Lynda. And I appreciate the comment on the surgery. I'm having both eyes done the same day, and so far everything I'm hearing is so positive that I'm anxious to be able to see well again!!

My condolences, Kate. As time has been moving on, I find that I am more frequently having to say goodbye to loved ones, too.

Kate Douglas
2/27/2019 08:03:02 pm

Hi Lil--Thank you, and you're right. I've lost friends and family, but I'm at an age where a lot of my friends and family members are in their mid to late seventies, and suddenly you look around at aging loved ones and realize you're right there in the same demographic. Luckily, I think our human spirit lets us believe it will always happen to someone else, or how would we cope?

Hang in there. Hope you're surviving a truly cold winter!

Kerry A. Kelly
2/27/2019 03:10:00 pm

My sincere condolences. I've also lost family to cancer and feel your loss nevertheless you will be in my thoughts and prayers.
On a happier note I am happy your surgery is currently approaching, that it goes well and you have a swift recovery. My daffodils are coming up; of what is left of them after the moles ate all the tulips and daffodils this winter. I will not be planting anymore bulbs. For I can't wait for spring to see the buds on the trees and the return of the wildlife.

Kate Douglas
2/27/2019 08:06:34 pm

I'm surprised the critters are eating the daffodils! I think they're somewhat poisonous. We've got them coming up all over the vineyard, and a lot of them are bulbs I don't recognize. Will have to wait until they bloom, but the snow has melted and they're predicting a wet spring, which this drought-stricken state can really use. We live in an area that could so easily burn, surrounded in forest as we are, but the water has recharged the springs and our pond is full. With luck we'll stay "less dry" through the summer.

Kate - Very sorry to hear about your brother. Understand as lost younger brother about 2 years ago. Sunshine ☀️ and hugs for you and family.

Kate Douglas
2/27/2019 08:10:07 pm

Thank you, Sue. My younger brother is still hale and hearty, which is a good thing. We're closer in age, and I actually used him as a source for the final book in my Intimate Relations romantic suspense series, where I had my hero see a hypnotherapist to help him figure out a recurring dream. Roger is a certified hypnotherapist and gave me the information I needed to make the scenes work. (It's always nice when you can keep resources in the family!)

Hi Patti! Haven't heard from you in ages--thank you. We're all going to miss him. He enjoyed the videos, too.

If you get a chance, go to my Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/pg/KateDouglas.authorpage/photos/?tab=album&album;_id=2283620651680947 and check out the pictures Doug got of our little town in the snow. It was just beautiful, though the novelty wore off after we had to hike up our driveway to get to the cars because there was too much snow to drive down to the house! We've had snow most of February, and it started at the end of January!

So sorry to hear about your brother. My prayers go out to you and your family. Best wishes with your cataract surgery. I hope to have mine done soon. Getting hard to read. If I can't read, my mood gets thunderous. Can't have that!

Kate Douglas
3/2/2019 09:10:16 pm

I know! My eyes have been getting bad for the past couple of years, but his past year my vision has really deteriorated. I've got bad double vision and can't be on the computer long at all because of eye strain. No driving at night or in the rain--it's really impacting my life at this point, but with the move we couldn't schedule the surgery, now knowing where we'd be when. SO glad it's next Thursday!

And thank you for the kind words on my brother. Your thoughts and prayers are much appreciated.

Cheryl Catoire-Eslick

I am sorry to hear about the loss of your brother you have my heart felt condolances. I lost my oldest sister in 2017 to complications from cancer and my husband had surgery on the 11th of this month to remove cancerous lesions in his mouth. He is home now with a trachea and we are gearing up for the radiation treatments. I will keep you and your family in my prayers.

Kate Douglas
3/2/2019 09:13:48 pm

Cheryl, I am so sorry! I think as we get older, we hear of this more and more. My brother's doctor told him that his myeloma cancer is very common among people who live or have lived in California's Central Valley, from all the exposure to pesticides. (It's a huge agricultural area) And of course that's where all three of us were raised. Our generation is the culmination of a lifetime of exposure to dangerous chemicals, and it's beginning to catch up. I hope your husband's treatment goes well. My thoughts will be with you both.

Debbie Westlake

I am very sorry about your brother and hope you and your family all the best as you cope with this.
I had cataracts removed from both eyes several years ago and they were the easiest surgeries I ever had. Take care.

Kate Douglas
3/4/2019 07:03:41 pm

Thanks, Debbie. He lived a good life, but it was just too short. I will miss him. And thank you also on the cataract note--I've heard this from so many people that I am really looking forward to getting it done. Double vision makes writing a real chore!

Contests are back! I'm not totally settled, but really miss giving away books, so ready or not, I'm going to start slow. International entries are welcome, though I will have to limit International winners to ebooks. Postage costs are just too high. Your addresses will not be shared or sold--I respect your privacy.
